Public Toilets in Insadong & Jongno: Anguk Station, Ssamziegil, Naminsa Madang

Insadong-gil runs for about 0.7km, with Anguk Station at its north end and Naminsa Madang and Tapgol Park at its south end. There are restrooms at both ends and at Ssamziegil in the middle, so you are never far from one, whichever end you start from. For Ikseon-dong, the options are Jongno 3-ga Station and the local community center. Only what Kakao Map listings and news reports confirm is included; few opening hours could be confirmed, and where they could not, we say so.

Anguk Station (Line 3) — outside the gates, north end of Insadong-gil

Kakao Map lists it as the Anguk Station open restroom (underground 62 Yulgok-ro), and Daum's station information puts the toilet outside the fare gates, so you can walk down and use it without riding the subway. Exit 6 is the north end of Insadong-gil, and Ssamziegil is 263m, a 4-minute walk, from that exit. The restroom's hours could not be confirmed from published sources.

Ssamziegil — floors 1–2 and basement level 1

44 Insadong-gil, in the middle of the street. Kakao Map lists two open restrooms here: one on floors 1–2 and one on basement level 1. The Ssamziegil building is open 10:30–20:30 daily and closed on the day of Seollal (Lunar New Year) and of Chuseok. No separate restroom hours could be confirmed, so it is safest to assume you can use them only while the building is open.

Naminsa Madang basement level 1 — south end of Insadong-gil

Basement level 1, 6 Insadong-gil (43-2 Insa-dong). It is a public restroom run by the Jongno-gu Facilities Management Corporation, and news reports say it received a public-restroom quality certification in 2025. A 2010 article says it was built with 42 stalls when Naminsa Madang was redeveloped, but the current number is not confirmed. It is 272m from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 5 and about 370m from Ssamziegil in a straight line. Its hours could not be confirmed from official sources.

Tapgol Park open restroom (ground floor)

99 Jong-ro (38-1 Jongno 2-ga), listed on Kakao Map as the Tapgol Park ground-floor open restroom. Tapgol Park is 225m from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 5, and about 500m from Ssamziegil in a straight line. Neither the park's opening hours nor the restroom's could be confirmed from published sources, so do not count on it late at night.

Other open restrooms on Insadong-gil — hours unconfirmed

Kakao Map also lists open restrooms at Insadong Maru main building (35-6 Insadong-gil) and annex (35-4 Insadong-gil), the Inchang Building (29 Insadong-gil) and the Hanaro Building (25 Insadong 5-gil). The Insadong Maru main building is about 100m from Ssamziegil in a straight line. Their hours could not be confirmed, so check the sign at the building entrance.

Ikseon-dong — the community center (2F) and Jongno 3-ga Station

The Jongno 1, 2, 3, 4-ga-dong Community Service Center, about 80m from the middle of Ikseon-dong's hanok alleys, has an open restroom on the 2nd floor (47 Samil-daero 30-gil). Nearby, the Jongno Tax Office ground floor (22 Samil-daero 30-gil) and the Saekdong Museum (85-7 Yulgok-ro 10-gil) are also listed on Kakao Map as open restrooms. Hours for all three could not be confirmed. At Jongno 3-ga Station (Lines 1, 3 and 5), Daum's station information lists toilets both inside and outside the fare gates, but which one is outside the gates, and near which exit, could not be confirmed. Ikseon-dong is by Exit 4, yet the station restroom listed on Kakao Map is closest to Exit 9. In Nagwon-dong near Exit 5, Kakao Map also lists the Jongno 3-ga open restroom (underground 26 Donhwamun-ro 11-gil), but who runs it and its hours are unconfirmed.

Subway stations — exit and re-enter within 15 minutes for free

Seoul's free re-entry started at 10 minutes in July 2023 and was extended to 15 minutes that October, so if you exit for the toilet and tap back in at the same station within 15 minutes you are not charged a new base fare; the re-entry is processed as one transfer. The rule covers Line 1 between Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni, Line 3 between Jichuk and Ogeum, and all of Line 5, so both Anguk and Jongno 3-ga stations qualify.

Tips

  • None of the Insadong and Jongno restrooms checked here could be confirmed as open 24 hours. If you will be out late, use a station toilet while the trains are still running.
  • Korea began removing bins from public toilets in January 2018, so used paper goes down the toilet.
  • Korean public toilets usually have paper, but in some it sits in a large dispenser outside the stalls rather than inside — take what you need before you go in. Keep pocket tissues in your bag in case it has run out.
